Engine Parts

An engine is a machine that converts the heat energy obtained from fuel into mechanical energy. Engines basically consist of main mechanical parts such as the cylinder head, engine block and oil pan. Engine parts can be divided into two basic categories: fixed engine parts and moving engine parts.

Fixed Engine Parts

Fixed engine parts are the parts of the engine that do not move. These parts support the structure and operation of the engine.

  • Engine block: It is the basic body of the engine. Includes cylinders, water cooling channels and oil channels.
  • Cylinder head: It is the upper part of the engine. It contains the valves that control the movement of the pistons.
  • Top cover: It is located on the cylinder head of the engine. Includes spark plugs and fuel injectors.
  • Intake manifold: It is a pipe system that carries air to the cylinders.
  • Exhaust manifold: It is a pipe system that carries exhaust out of the cylinders.
  • Crankcase: It is the lower part of the engine. Contains oil and other liquids.

Moving Engine Parts

Moving engine parts are the moving parts of the engine. These parts enable the engine to work.

  • Piston: It is a cylindrical part that moves within the cylinder and transmits the pressure resulting from the combustion of the air-fuel mixture to the crankshaft.
  • Connecting rod: It is a rod that transmits the movement of the piston to the crankshaft.
  • Crankshaft: It is the main shaft that enables the engine to run. It transmits the movement it receives from the connecting rods to the wheels through gears.
  • Camshaft: It is the shaft that allows the valves to open and close.
  • Valves: These are parts that can be opened and closed, allowing the passage of intake and exhaust gases.

Other Engine Parts

Other parts found on some engines include:

  • Gaskets and seals: These are the parts that close the gaps between the parts of the engine and prevent oil leakage.
  • Camshaft chains: These are the chains that rotate the camshaft.
  • Exhaust silencers: These are parts that reduce the noise of exhaust gases.
  • Air filters: These are parts that clean the air.
  • Crank pulleys: These are the pulleys that transmit the movement of the engine to other parts.
  • Diesel / gasoline automatics: These are the parts that provide fuel to the engine.
  • Engine tension springs: Springs that keep the camshaft chains tensioned.
  • Miscellaneous parts: Other parts required for the operation of the engine.

Engine parts are important to ensure that the engine operates efficiently and smoothly. Regular maintenance and replacement of these parts helps extend the life of the engine.
